Week 5
We are almost to the end of immersion! This morning, I presented my experiences/project to the cohort and listened to everyone else's presentations. Seeing everyone's clinical research relate back to their work in Ithaca is exciting and encouraging. I had a unique opportunity this summer to branch out of my usual Ithaca research and do something very different, which was both refreshing and educational.
This week I also had the opportunity to shadow more movement disorder patients, as well as make progress on the research project. The major challenge at this point is to consistently threshold the deconvoluted images with minimal bias. There are a myriad of threshold algorithms, but I am currently leaning toward one that emphasizes the entropy of the image's histogram. We received communication from a researcher that has previously quantified DAB stains, and she is providing some further direction on how to handle the area fraction analysis.
Being from rural Kansas, the city has been quite the environment to be immersed in. Lots of food, lots of fun, lots of people, everywhere, all the time. It has been both exhilarating and exhausting, and I am ready to visit home for the first time in over a year. Here is a totally legitimate picture of me and the NYC skyline.
Until next time,
Caleb Jones
