Week 3- Caroline Thompson
Week 3 has been great! Attended office hours as well as some surgeries. Interesting surgeries I attended included a breast reduction. Since the appearance of breasts changes dramatically when a patient is standing vs. laying down, it was very impressive to me that the surgeons could conduct the entire surgery while the patient was laying down. At the very end of the surgery, before closing, the patient's bed was raised and the result of the reduction was perfectly inline with the patients expectations.
My favorite portion of this week was office hours. Before entering each room, Dr. Spector asks the patient if they are okay with students joining in. Many patients actually seem excited for students to attend their visit. One patient in particular was very exciting to chat with. She was coming in for a post-op checkup after having her jaw reconstructed. Her mandible had necrosed as a result bisphosphonate treatment. I work with bisphosphonates in my research up in Ithaca, so it was very interesting to chat with her and hear her opinion on the pharmaceutical industry and bisphosphonates in-particular.
Looking forward to the second half of immersion!
