BME Immersion - Fourth Week 4

Day 16 - Day 18:

I had the opportunity to supervise Dr. Nima Maghami (along with a few of the medical students) perform a hernia repair on a patient that had signs of preliminary strangulation within the fatty tissue and intestines making it difficult for blood to flow properly. In a long-term setting, cutting off blood circulation can damage healthy tissue. Further, I had the opportunity to join the trauma team in round-table discussions in which details and specific methods were shared for current and special trauma cases.

Day 19:

Currently, I am working on a project with MRCP/ERCP imaging. My project focuses on analyzing and proving if ERCP/MRCP is better than MRCP/ERCP in terms of imaging stones or/and tumors within the abdomen (bile duct) area. Therefore, I am in the process of being added to an existing IRB protocol in order to access and subsequently examine Weill Cornell patients who underwent MRCP/ERCP imaging within the past 2 years for specific critical stone obstruction.

Day 20:

In today's group meeting, we had the opportunity to learn and discuss the bias and fairness in AI when it comes to skin color and gender identity. Also, I have scheduled a meeting with the Cancer Center Imaging research manager Eileen Wang Chang and my clinical mentor Dr. Jian Shou to discuss in detail if it is possible to be added to the IRB database before de-identified patient images for analysis.
